Fruits and Veggies May Improve Lung Function in COPD

A study has been conducted giving highlights about the importance of including high amount of fruits and vegetables in diet of COPD patients. According to the study, fruits and vegetable having a great amount of anti-oxidants showed a big effect on improving lung function in COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is a disease where there is an increase airway and systemic inflammation caused by aggravated oxidative stress. According to the study, balancing the oxidative stress may help in relieving COPD by eating food rich in anti-oxidants and it can help lungs to be protected and have good immunity.

The researchers conducted the study for 60 patients where they have a group with controlled diet plan where they have an increase consumption of fruits and veggies and a group where diet were not instructed.

These two groups have a similarities baseline like demographic factors, smoking or smoking cessation, dietary habits, and spirometry results. They were also similar in terms of physical activity, changes in body mass index, or alcohol consumption during the study.

As a result, high anti-oxidant diet of the intervention group helped in the improvement in FEV1 or Force Expiratory Volume or the amount of air a patient forcefully exhale in one second.

And according to them, "Our findings suggest that a dietary (change) to higher antioxidant foods intake may be associated with improvement in lung function."

Nursing Informatics

"Healthcare professionals in today’s society realize the importance of transforming healthcare through the use of information, knowledge, and technology"

Nursing Informatics is the integration of Nursing science, Computer science, and Information science. Its goal is to have an integration of data by identifying, collecting, processing information to support nurses in educating, researching, and expanding of nursing knowledge that would greatly help Nurses to gain new ideas in order for them render high quality nursing care to patients.

Here are some of the reason why Nursing Informatics is important to Nurses:

+ It helps the future nurses to be world-competitive.
+ Information is a critical component of effective decision-making and high quality nursing practice. The information and knowledge gained through nursing informatics can bring increased awareness and understanding of nursing and health care issues.
+ Nursing Informatics is committed to maintaining a clinical perspective and promoting research that would bear directly on improving patient care.
+ Nursing Informatics can make nursing practice visible in local, national, and international health care data sets, thus empowering nurses with information to influence policy.
